eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy
EMDR Therapy provides a structure for healing from traumas, whether complex (CPTSD), “big” (PTSD) or “little” (more on this below). In EMDR therapy, the client is asked to hold dual awareness: noticing the memory while experiencing bilateral stimulation. Bilateral stimulation can be done by tracking an item with your eyes, holding two buzzers which alternate vibrations or through auditory input. While the therapist facilitates the bilateral stimulation, you will allow yourself to notice what you experience in regards to the memory or negative thoughts and feelings. It is not required that you share details or tell the story of the trauma. EMDR Therapists are well trained to guide and support you through this journey. EMDR Therapy is effective in person, and virtually.

“big” and “Little” traumas?
Admittedly, these terms may be a bit outdated, but they serve their purpose. “Big T” trauma is a diagnosis of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder. It simply means that the diagnostic criteria is met for a formal diagnosis. “Little t” trauma is everything else. These are adverse life experiences that still interrupt our quality of life, but may not check all the boxes needed to a formal diagnosis.
Luckily, EMDR therapy isn’t just for the PTSD- it’s for the individual.
Big T and little t trauma are equally as important to treat.
